Each player receives 7 pieces of a distinct color, starting with 6 angels and 1 archangel.
In the game app, the number of archangels per player is per the current heaven level. For example, in the Second Heaven, each player has 2 archangels. In the Third Heaven, each player has 3 archangels, and so on until the Seventh Heaven, in which each player has 7 archangels.
At the end of each game (see Goal of the game), the 7 pieces that belong to the winning player are proclaimed the true and faithful angels, while the 7 pieces of the losing player are denounced as fallen angels.
The pieces are initially placed on the board as detailed in Board orientation and initial placement of the pieces.
