The following game board is imprinted with 1, 2, or 3 dots in the black and white squares. The number of dots represents the number of moves (turns) that are required for a piece to reach a red square from that position. This helps recognize the forward or backward progress of a piece movement toward a “Gate of Heaven”, as capturing any "Gate of Heaven" is mathematically possible only from a red square (see: Capturing a Gate of Heaven).
